It was great to host Lambeth Pensioners in Parliament to discuss the issues that matter to them. More than one in six people of pensionable age live in relative poverty, with about 2 million pensioners now living in fuel poverty. This is one of the highest rates in Western Europe. The Government has announced a cut in the support available to households in fuel poverty next winter. Many pensioners are demoralised and fearful for their future wellbeing. The pensioners I spoke to were keen to press home the need for better support for households in fuel poverty throughout 2023. They also urged me to push for an end to the forced transfer of households onto more expensive prepayment meters.
