Early years education is vital to children’s development and I am saddened by reports of the unfortunate circumstances the childcare sector is currently in. The coronavirus pandemic has shown how vital access to Early Years education. The pandemic has also exposed the damaged financial health of many providers after years of underfunding.

‘I share the concerns of parents and educators about the recent announcement that Chestnut Nursery will be closing its doors for good on the 31st March as a result of the provider reneging on their lease and unsafe conditions. This situation leaves parents in a difficult position as many of them struggle to find last-minute affordable childcare. In addition, the closure of the nursery places staff in a very vulnerable position, particularly during the ongoing pandemic.’ Lambeth Council have been able to find places for most children and support for staff looking for new jobs.
