Bell has spoken out against rail fare rises, calling on the Government to take action to prevent disproportionate price increases to passengers.
With the Government set to allow a 1.6% increase this year, analysis from the Labour Party found the average commuter will now be paying £3,113 for their season ticket, an increase of £919 or 42% more than in 2010.
New figures released yesterday by Labour show:
- The cost of a season ticket from Streatham to London Bridge has increased by £305 (39% increase) since 2010.
- Average fares will rise to 42% more than they were in 2010.
- Average fares have risen two and half times faster than wages.
- Some commuters will be paying over £3,350 more to travel to work than in 2010.
- In Boris Johnson’s constituency, the cost of an annual season ticket from West Drayton to London Paddington has risen by £617 since 2010.
Bell Ribeiro-Addy, Labour Member of Parliament for Streatham, said:
“The huge price increases over the last decade are a reminder that privatisation has driven prices up and services down.
“Rip-off rail fares and substandard services are two sides of the same coin with private companies seeking to deliver shareholder value at the expense of investment in better services for the public.
“Rather than propping up failing train companies, the Government should take our railways back into public ownership to ensure we are getting value for money.”
