Streatham MP Bell-Ribeiro-Addy has led a backbench effort to throw out the Immigration Bill, putting down a reasoned amendment along with Diane Abbott (Hackney North & Stoke Newington), Caroline Lucas (Brighton Pavilion), John McDonnell (Hayes & Harlington), Richard Burgon (Leeds East) and Dawn Butler (Brent North).

Supported by a further ten Labour MPs, the amendment rejects the Bill on the basis of:

  • Its failure to secure the rights of British citizens working, living and studying in European Economic Area countries.
  • Its failure to provide permanent automatic settled status to EU citizens currently living in the UK.
  • Its lack of provisions for ending the hostile environment.
  • The sweeping powers it gives to the Government to change immigration law without Parliamentary oversight.

Bell Ribeiro-Addy, Member of Parliament for Streatham, said:

“The Immigration Bill would give the Government sweeping powers to alter immigration law without thorough scrutiny and extend the Hostile Environment policies that led to the Windrush Scandal.

“We’ve tabled this amendment because the Bill remains completely unfit for purpose, rowing back on the rights of migrant workers, while also risking the rights of British citizens abroad.”
