It was heartening to join a large counterdemonstration against Tommy Robinson’s latest hate march, organised by Stand Up to Racism and backed by the TUC, trade unions and faith groups. The campaign of racist and Islamophobic violence witnessed in UK towns and cities in early August was a reminder of the continuing threat that the far right poses. It left many people fearing for their safety for several days. Whilst the eventual outcome of this was a show of collective strength that put far right thugs firmly in their place, it is worrying to see them continuing to turn out in numbers. It only underscores the importance for anti-fascists to turn up and stand in their way.
