Two women sit smiling at a small table in a bookstore, a microphone between them and stacked copies of “The Crown’s Silence” by Brooke N. Newman displayed prominently. From left to right: Dr Brooke N. Newman, wearing a black and white plaid pattern blazer, Bell Ribeiro-Addy, wearing a black top and a multicoloured skirt. Bookshelves filled with art and history titles surround them.

It was great to join Dr Brooke Newman at the flagship Gower Street Waterstones for the UK launch of a very important title. ‘The Crown’s Silence’ is a study of the Monarchy’s relationship with the Transatlantic slave trade. It uncovers compelling evidence of the British Crown’s central role in developing, expanding and upholding the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The book’s central contention that slavery was foundational to the British Monarchy is increasingly the dominant view. As an institution, it is vital for the Crown to acknowledge this and commit to repair.
