Finally, we saw the long-awaited publication of Baroness Amos’s Maternity and Neonatal Investigation. This report reiterates many of the themes campaigners have been raising for a long time. Women and birthing people are not being listened to, structural inequalities, discrimination and racism remain embedded in care systems and services are not designed in a way that ensures consistent safety. 

During the Health Secretary’s statement on the report, I pushed him on the government’s manifesto pledge to tackle maternal health inequalities. With Black mothers still almost three times more likely to die during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum, it is crucial that we make this commitment without further delay.
