Bell stands outside HMP Brixton on a clear day.

With the Clink Charity’s flagship restaurant at HMP Brixton at risk of closure, I have written to the Ministry of Justice, urging “full and fair consideration” of the charity’s contract renewal bid.

Since opening in 2014, The Clink Restaurant at HMP Brixton has frequently placed among the Top 10 restaurants in London on TripAdvisor. It received a Travellers’ Choice Award in 2022, placing it in the top 10% of restaurants worldwide.

The charity, which trains prisoners in catering, has had a positive impact on prisoner rehabilitation, with graduates of their programme 65.6% less likely to reoffend.

In 2023, The Clink trained 830 students across UK prisons, with 52% securing employment after release. However, the charity is one of a number of rehabilitation services asked to retender for government contracts in recent years.

I’m calling on the government to do everything they can to protect the services provided by rehabilitation charities like The Clink. We know prisoners who secure jobs are less likely to reoffend when they leave prison and more likely to get their lives back on track.

Over the last 10 years, the Clink at HMP Brixton has become a flagship destination for this concept, drawing in diners from far and wide across London.

Any consideration of this contract must give due weight to the money saved by reducing reoffending rates and the value it creates by upskilling and getting people into work.

Letter on House of Commons headed paper from Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP to Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood:

Dear Secretary of State,

I am writing in light of the recent news that The Clink Charity may be forced to close its flagship restaurant in HMP Brixton, in my constituency, as its current contract comes to an end.

The charity was founded almost twenty years ago, and its programme of restaurants, bakeries and gardens has enabled thousands of prisoners to gain valuable skills which have supported them upon completion of their sentences.

Since opening in 2014, The Clink Restaurant at HMP Brixton has become a popular destination in my constituency. It is frequently placed among the Top 10 restaurants in London on TripAdvisor, and in 2022 was awarded a Travellers’ Choice Award, placing it in the top 10% of restaurants worldwide.

The scheme has had a hugely positive impact on prisoner rehabilitation. Graduates of The Clink programme are 65.6% less likely to reoffend. In 2023 alone, The Clink trained 830 students across UK prisons, with 52% securing employment after release.

The charity’s commitment to supporting graduates continued even during the Covid-19 pandemic, when its restaurants and bakeries were forced to close. Clink Support Workers ensured that graduates in the community, and those released early from prison, could still access essential services. In addition, the charity established a COVID-19 Graduate Emergency Support Fund to help those facing financial hardship purchase groceries.

The work of The Clink has been truly invaluable. Closure of the Brixton restaurant would be a huge loss to the local community, and in particular to the prisoners who benefit so greatly from its programme.

I therefore hope that The Clink’s bid to renew its tender will be given full and fair consideration, so that this vital initiative can continue its work at HMP Brixton.

Yours sincerely,

Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP

Labour Member of Parliament for Clapham & Brixton Hill
