A Fairer Deal for Private Renters

The Renters’ Rights Bill is a long overdue piece of legislation, which aims to improve conditions for private renters. If passed, this Bill will finally scrap No Fault Evictions, introduce new powers to tackle slum private landlords and limit the frequency of rent rises. I spoke on the Bill during its Third Reading — the last chance for a substantive debate on the issue in the House of Commons. Even in its current form, it represents a significant improvement but I believe more can and must be done to protect renters and ensure private landlords meet basic standards. I spoke in favour of several amendments to strengthen the measures in this Bill, stressing the need to tackle above-inflation rent rises and give private tenants more powers in regard to challenging widespread disrepair in their housing. I will continue to fight for a fairer deal for renters.
