Bell Ribeiro-Addy Windrush Day

On the second annual Windrush Day, Streatham MP Bell Ribeiro-Addy has called on the Government to secure justice for the Windrush Generation.

Commemorating 72 years since the first Windrush migrants landed in the UK, Ms. Ribeiro-Addy addressed a Stand Up to Racism rally in Windrush Square, where she called on the Government to implement the Windrush Lessons Learned Review, provide compensation for victims and commit to building a fairer immigration system.

Bell-Ribeiro Addy, Labour Member of Parliament for Streatham, said:

“Less than 5% of Windrush scandal victims who’ve applied for compensation have received any. This is a scandal in itself. I’m calling on the Government to address the fundamental flaws in its compensation scheme to ensure victims and their families get the justice they deserve.

“The Home Office must also implement the 30 recommendations outlined in the Windrush Lessons Learned review in full to prevent a tragic rerun of the Windrush Scandal. What’s the point in finding out what you need to change, if you’re not going to change it?

“The broader lesson of Windrush is what happens when Governments set arbitrary migration targets. One of the worst things about the Scandal is that so many of the policies that caused so much suffering are still in place.

“On Windrush Day, we must commit to ending the Hostile Environment and creating a fairer, more humane immigration system.”
