Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP sits with Black maternal health campaigners Clotilde Abe and Tinuke Awe at a long wooden table in a parliamentary committee room with ornate red‑and‑gold wallpaper and dark wood panelling. Behind them hangs a large banner reading “APPG on Black Maternal Health – Working to end racial disparities in UK maternal health.”

The APPG for Black Maternal Health hosted an open evidence session in Parliament to feed into the National Maternity and Neonatal Investigation. This discussion will feed into the APPG’s written evidence to the investigation, highlighting changes needed to address racial inequalities in maternity and neonatal care and improve services overall.

Maternal death rates are 20% higher than in 2009-11 and maternity care is not working for women, babies, families, or staff. We know Black and Asian mothers are on the sharp end of this crisis, so it is vital that their voices are well represented in this national inquiry. Thank you to Five X More and to all the parents, families, community organisations, healthcare professionals and supporters who came to share their experience and expertise.
