The Home Secretary was in Parliament laying out plans for policing reform. I welcomed her announcement of 13,000 new neighbourhood police officers. This follows the Met Police’s commitment to allocate 28 new police officers to Brixton Town Centre. We know that a more visible policing presence is vital for tackling antisocial behaviour, which I know is a major issue locally.

But there is still work to do when it comes to building trust in policing. I asked the Home Secretary what the government is doing to tackle a key cause of this: entrenched racial bias. As an MP, I have seen too many situations where the police ultimately end up harming people they are meant to serve. This is counterproductive to public confidence in policing and undermines their work as a whole. As I have highlighted often in Parliament, whenever more power is handed to the police, that needs to come with more transparency, more accountability and more scrutiny.
