Immigration Rule Change Risks NHS Nurse Exodus

recent report by the Royal College of Nursing suggests that the government’s plan to extend the qualifying period for indefinite leave to remain risks an exodus of NHS nurses. Their study found that this rule change placed up to 46,000 nurses at risk of leaving the UK as a consequence. I pointed this out in a brief intervention during a debate on these changes. In the context of a pre-existing retention crisis, we really can’t afford to lose any staff. The government needs to be honest about the impact this would have on our NHS and rethink its proposals.
