I was drawn for my first Prime Minister’s Question under a Labour government. I used it to raise the online trade in human remains, calling on the deputy prime minister Angela Rayner (filling in for Keir Starmer) to end this. Remains looted during colonialism are being sold and auctioned on platforms like Facebook, Etsy, Gumtree and even Amazon, sometimes disguised or incorporated into modified items.
This commodification of human remains perpetuates a dark legacy of colonialism, exploitation and dehumanisation. I was glad that the deputy prime minister agreed to a meeting to discuss what can be done to address this depraved practice and respectfully repatriate stolen remains. I have followed up with Baroness Mellon (Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State
for Patient Safety, Women’s Health and Mental Health) as the relevant minister to request a meeting.
