Bell stands with two people indoors in front of a blue door and a wall featuring a colorful abstract painting of a face. She wears a black top and blazer with a red lanyard and glasses. A man to her left wears a white shirt and blue apron. A woman to her right wears black with a yellow lanyard and glasses. Bell and the woman wear name badges, suggesting a professional or institutional setting.

I was honoured to attend the Chef’s Night at HMP Brixton with acclaimed chef and author Jon Watts. After serving time in a young offenders’ institute, Jon turned his life around, learning to cook and becoming the first person to achieve all three Duke of Edinburgh awards whilst in prison. Many of you will know that the Clink Charity’s flagship restaurant at HMP Brixton is at risk of closure.

The charity is one of several rehabilitation services asked to retender for contracts in recent months. I wrote to the government about this, urging them to give due consideration to the socioeconomic impact of this work. We are talking about a tried and tested programme, which reduces reoffending rates, upskills workers and gets people into employment. All three should be priorities for any Labour government. I hope the restaurant can be saved.
