I spoke in a debate on asylum accommodation, challenging false narratives about refugees, asylum seekers and migrants that seem to have bedded in among our political class. People who are fleeing war, famine, persecution and life-threatening situations are fully deserving of our compassion and support. The system is the issue, not the people; from the slow claims process to rampant profiteering and a discourse which is divorced from reality. We should be meeting our legal and moral duties, not fuelling false narratives and leaving refugee families to languish in miserable conditions.
