I once again pressed the government to amend the Road Traffic Act to protect cats. Every day, hundreds of cats are hit on our roads. It is something of a legal anomaly that the law compels drivers to stop and report collisions with dogs, pigs, mules and certain other animals but not cats. As I pointed out during a debate on the government’s Animal Welfare Strategy, there is a simple legislative fix for this. With one small change to existing laws, we could ensure drivers have to report collisions, saving feline lives and helping many owners get closure. I was glad to hear the government will take this into consideration.
